Tourmaline Surfing Park

Butch and I got up at 4 am to drive to San Diego from his house in La Quinta. Waves were waist to head high and glassy. We both rode our inflatible paddle boards. His is 10' Uli and mine a 9'3'' C4.

The Inflatible boards are a fun challenge. You really have to concentrate on riding the board. We surfed off the point in the distance. The tide was low and big rocks and ledges were sticking out of the water. Since the swell was alittle inconsistant many waves broke only a few feet from dry rock. The waves hit these hollow boils caused by the rocks under water and the water sucks out from the bottom of the wave. The inflatible boards are slower and made these sections a real challenge.

I also almost ran over a surfer girl that had turned around and was paddling toward shore when i caught a head high set wave. I was in a wide leg stance just trying to steer away from her when she looked back over shoulder to see me coming right at her. The look she had on her face was priceless! I missed her, but it made me laugh thinking of riding over her on the inflatible board.I know, it shouldn't.

SUP n' Surf At Masonboro

Tough economic times turns a paddle board into a tow boat. I glued an Easy Plug to the bottom nose of my surfboard and one to the back of my paddle board, in order to tow my surfboard across to Masonboro. It worked great. I used the surf board leash to attach the two. Not only can I have both boards with me but I have an extra leash if one brakes. I also found it just as easy to wear the leash instead of attaching it to the paddle board. It's probably safer as well.

For what I could tell, it takes about 8 minutes to paddle back across against the tide and wind. The toughest part is transporting the boards and paddle to the water. The traditional paddle board "shoulder carry" seems to be easier than the hand grip with gloves on.

FUN surf with nobody out. I didn't see anyone coming or going. A weekend rarity at mas. Thigh to chest high with perfect shape and light NNW winds. Great for paddle boarding.

Today, late afternoon at Windansea. One kid out catching the shorebreak. He was taken off and trying to launch airs where the shorebreak comes together. I almost put my wetsuit on and went out. It's hard to find this place empty. It doesn't seem to be SUP friendly from what I hear. When its's bigger wave break way outside, that's when to go on the SUP.

Sunset Cliffs before I suited up. I little rough and disorganized but no one out and good for the paddle board. I SUPed alone for about an hour before 3 other people came out. I compare this wave to our inlet on a big day. The wave holds up really well. The paddle board makes all the sections and the paddle out is easy. Getting in and out of the water with the rocks is the hard part.

Another shoot of Sunset Cliffs. My camera is on zoom, the wave is pretty far out. We would be calling this set well overhead back home. I would say it has a good 10 foot drop down the face with a 6-7 foot shoulder. What I would have done to have my 8' Ripper. I surfed a rented 9' 6" Jerry Lopez Sound of Music.

This is Sunday at Windansea, my first surf. Windansea is a tricky wave. It comes in at an angle and makes the wave A frame and jack up. It looks simple from shore but will toss you over in a second. There're lots rocks that cause the wave to boil up and barrel.... The weather has been unusual for San Diego. Lots of rain and wind on Saturday and half of Sunday. Beautiful today, just like home. The typical weather patterns bring lots of fog and light winds that give them A+ surf conditions most days.

Conditions appear quite favorable for the most part though not ideal, so rapid intensification is not very likely.

Upside down shot of my surf injury. It's hard to see, it's the size of a dime! I got pounded. Actually my knee pounded the board. Or vise versa. A bell ringer. And my calf cramped I was hit so hard. Funny.

Here's my new board and my personal review.

The nose flip works great. The nose or tail rocker OR both make the lift in this board fantastic. What I believe is so much more great is that it sits high in the pocket and generates alot of speed high on the face. Some boards go high and don't go back down. My C4 SubVector takes a lot of muscle to pump the face and does a good job staying down but is hard to lift up the face.

I can see why I that PSH is popular "of course" in Hawaii, it will ride high in the barrels.

I got this from the classified section of the standupzone. I thinking about the 8' Wide Ripper. But there's no surf here anyways! I like the mosaic pads for looks and traction, I'm worried about ripping the little pieces off like I have destroyed my stomp pad. I love the tail of this board, I know why they call it a ripper. I've always been intriqued by PSH. But I'd take a 8'0 SubV first? Or if a friend could quad someones used 9' Batwing!

Paddling back to the boat from SUP surfing we got this from the wildlife officers. We had our life jackets on board. We didn't even think to put them on from the boat to shore, 50 yards.

The interesting thing, they said we needed them everywhere, including the recreation areas (surf).

The tide was turning and the wind was perfect and I was leaving. Being a surf addict is bitter sweet. I was tired, sore, had sun burnt lips, red eyes and still wanted one more ride.

A hollow section during an afternoon session. The wave really takes shape at low tide. High tide was in the morning so we had to wait till about 3pm for the wave machine to turn on. It would be knee to waist high in the mornings and chest high once the tide dropped.

A long cruising section. Same day as above, maybe the same wave.

I don't know which section this is, they all start looking the same. I think this is Saturday morning around 8am. I was the first one out at 6am. I caught an overhead wave from the point all the way past the hotel. About 3/4 of the entire wave. It took me about 12 minutes to walk back. On the way past the hotel I see one guy on the hotel balcony. I take another wave, almost identical to the first one. This time surfers are running down the sand dune toward the point.

"El Zorro" took these shots during the week. Over 200 shots in total. That's like 4 waves worth!

This spot was made for the SUP. Although, the longest wave in the world comes with a price. You either walk back with your board in hand and 20 mph winds through rocks, sand dunes and a well timed paddle out at the point. Paddling the entire way takes about 15 minutes against the current. ORRRRR take the boat back to the point ,which takes a couple minutes, while watching perfect barrel after barrel reel off!

I walked the main point to the hotel entrance, it was 950 strides. My stride is not quite a yard. My final wave was past the hotel entrance! The wave were around shoulder to head high on the sets, again maybe bigger by our standards on the drop. SUPs are the way to ride this wave. Its good on a shortboard when there's enough swell and the tide is lower. The strong offshore winds blow you right off on slower high tide waves.

Huanachoco, the easy side that the begginers surf and the fishermen go out in their reed boats. Great surf by our standards.

A restaurant on the main beach in Lima. The beach is know as Waikiki (you know, like Hawaii) because one of the first surfing beach clubs. Small surf typically.Here it was waist/chest high.

Surfed Huanachoco today. Chicamas is forecasted to be overhead Friday and Saturday! The rides so far have been around 200-300 yards on the good ones as far as I can tell. The hotel sits about halfway through th entire break. I've got back to the hotel in 2 waves. Some 5-6 foot faces on the good sets.

We arrived into Lima at 2am Saturday morning and surfed at 10am. We surfed 40km south of the city in a bay called San Bartola. It has 3 distinct breaks. A left on the inside south bay, a right about 100 yards north of it and an outside right on the far north end of the bay. The two inside waves were head high , maybe biggeron the sets, we SUPed the right. I paddled out to the outside break for a closer look. Butch's friend Jorge, our guide that is from Lima, said it was a medium size day. The sets were double overhead. I didn't get to close because I didn't really know how far the sets would swing out. Most of the guy were surfing long pintails and good at it.

Can you say "Hurry and get off the boat!"

This is a pre-SUP trip to CR. A left hand, rock reef that was basically unsurfable due to the inconsistant take off point. The wave had an 8-10 ft. face. A SUP surf would have been perfect! And no need for the boat, it was breaking about a 1/2 mile offshore on the point of Tamirindo's bay. I believe it is Langosta point. Just paddle 10 minutes and your ther from town. To the right of this picture is a small island that no one surfs. There are so many opportunities awaiting that I never realized before SUP.

Sunday Surprises. Good surf with a NE wind swell in the water today. A lot more than expected. I SUPed Masonboro with sets in the chest high range if you were in the right place. About a dozen surfers out just across from the dune walkover. I paddle out to the left of them but the north swells were running further down the beach. So I paddled past them, caught some lefts and found the honey hole about 200 yards down the beach. The swell was sweeping down the beach, about chest high and consistent. It was only thigh to waist where everyone else was.

No one follows a SUP.

I switched to my surfboard Monday after getting some average waves on the sup. It takes a few rides to get used to the weight differences of a 9 foot paddle board and a 6 foot fish. Its easy to over power the turns.

Its easy to forget how much you love to surf a regular board and a joy to remember that you do!

1,2,3 Count them. Three good surfs in 10 days. Yesterday was solid ground swell with leftover today. Near perfect conditions. Yesterday the CB inlet was solid chest on the sets and breaking like an outer reef, curling around the sandbar. Today, Masonboro was 2-4 ft with offshores.

... And a balmy 51 degrees and sunny.

Krista and I dodged two snow storms in two weeks. Last week we went to Charlotte to buy the van and it started snowing before we left. This Thursday night I drove 8 hours through after work to Manchester, Pennsysomethingoranother (cant spell). They where expecting record snow fall to start on Friday afternoon. We caught a flight back home at noon and they already closed the airport for Saturday. Needless to say, the plane flight through the storm was interesting. Luckily I wore my brown pants! Dodged another one.

I rode Butch's board, the 10' C4 Subvector, today. Solid head high surf. The board is really good. On bigger waves it shines. Based on this board, I bet the 9'6'' board is sick. I really enjoyed the sharp nose and rocker.

Lots of cameras on the beach. Maybe someone got one of the SubV.

Superman Runs into Kryptonite!

Thought #1: I think I just hit my board with the paddle. Oh no.

Thought #2: Wow, I hit both sides? Weird.

Thought #3: Ohhhhhh SHITTTTT! This aint so good.

Thought 4: The waves are pretty good and I'm all alone at Masonboro, I could surf some more. Except, swimming back with two boards will suck.

Saturday morning at Masonboro, light north winds, the tides filling in and fun waist high waves. All alone, what more could I ask. I'll surf till noon. I catch a fun waist/chest wave that's throwing a little lip over, I stall, tuck, ride and hang on till the last second and bust through the back of the wave. I pulled the board back and.....(see pictures)

It looks fixable.

Van Project & Last Weekends Surf

Hopefully, next weekend I will be purchasing this metallic silver E350 passenger van. The idea is to have it converted to 4x4 by Quigley. 65 degrees and surf is so much better than 30 degrees and the ankle biters we've had for three weeks.

Is this an Omen? This was the second 2 wheel drive van I saw stuck there this past weekend. You can write the warning signs in spanish, but you can't write them in stupid.

Run Forest, Run!

Butch and I went back & forth 3 times to Sunset Cliffs and Mission Beach at 6am trying to make the right call. Sunset Cliffs wasn't breaking because of the extremely high tide. I didn't know at the time that it was still an hour before completely full. Mission Beach looked BIG on the sets. I know from previous surfs that it thumps when overhead. I was trying to avoid surfing a beach break. Tourmaline's was small. We decided to hit Mission instead of waiting on the tide to fall. We scored a fun 2 hour session.

This is "Garbage". Yep, that's it name. I call it, "Don't bust your ass running down the steps to get in spot".We surfed the break to the left of this picture aka. "Garbage South". The sets were chest to head, overhead for us. Hollow take offs that can suck up and give small barrel.

The Inside Scoop.

We got a little schooling from Jim and Chris from ULI. They had never seen the C4 ISup. Jim tells Chris to pick my board up and Chris says "about 8-9lbs. of pressure'. What! I pumped the shit out of it. ULI provides a pressure gauge with their boards. He was right on the money. In addition, the pump they have is smooth and can crank out the psi's with little effort. Unfortunately it doesn't fit the C4 inflation valve. They also inform me that when I do get the pressure up, the valve washer blows out when you release the pressure. This causes you to find something thin to help reinsert the rubber washer.

It was really cool seeing all the ULIs. They come with Kevlar strips down the center of both sides for rigidity. Seem to work compared to my board. Or could it be that I have half the psi's?

We also saw two prototype boards, a 9ft and 8ft. Pretty cool stuff. These guys were great. Jim lent me his paddle to use for two days and gave me a new leash.

West Coast Holiday Surf

This day was a super high tide at 7ft. The waves were chest to head on sets. I forgot my leash but had one on a surfboard I have kept in Butches garage in the desert for two years. It broke on an overhead bomb that stuck me on a paddle out just 30 minutes into the session. Luckily, the tide was super high and you could wait between sets to get out. I got caught two more times by sets and had to make the swim. You can see the shorebreak was pumping.

The word was, a few days prior, this beach break was unsurfable because of the size. The tide was dropping as we left and was starting to wall up and get vertical with bigger sets.
